Keen to know if the problem if there is change in the health of the organ, after the surgery, the Dr. Alex Chang along with his colleagues conducted the research and found out that the performance of the kidney actually improved after they underwent weight loss surgery.

The research took two and a half year approximately to complete and 3134 people participated in it. They noticed the health changes in the participants after one year they underwent the weight loss surgery. On average, the weight reduction in the participants was to 90.9 kg from 130.1 kg, the mass index reduction to 32.6 kg/m2 from 46.8 kg/m2, and kidney functioning increased to 99.1 ml/min/1.73m2 from 94.8. That means every 5 KG of weight loss can be associated with 0.50 ml/min/1.73m2 increases in the eGFR. In fact, the eGFR showed more positive results for those patients who suffered from chronic kidney diseases.

Dr. Chang further concluded by saying that there is a strong relation between kidney problems and weight loss and that the kidney function is influenced by muscle mass. Even the patients who do not had any kidney problems, also showed improvements.
